FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

A. HOLLY PATTERSON EXTENDED CARE FACILITY RECEIVES TOP RATING OF FIVE OUT OF FIVE STARS IN OVERALL AND QUALITY MEASURES AND FOUR OUT OF FIVE STARS IN HEALTH INSPECTIONS AND STAFFING, FROM THE US CENTERS FOR MEDICARE AND MEDICAID NURSING HOMES LISTING,   A SIGNIFICANT ACCOMPLISHMENT SIGNALING THE IMPRESSIVE TURNAROUND OF A FACILITY SERVING NASSAU’S VULNERABLE POPULATION THAT WAS FORMERLY IN DISTRESS, REFLECTING THE NHCC’S COMMITMENT TO SUPERIOR QUALITY OF CARE

Ranking follows federal government yardsticks to nursing homes overall rating, health inspections, nurse staffing and quality measures of individual care and is evidence that AHP staff have collaboratively worked together, under the leadership of senior vice president, Larry Slatky, to ensure that quality of care and safety of residents are top priorities

Out of 15,500 nursing homes surveyed in the United States, only 11 on Long Island, including A. Holly Patterson, received five stars overall and only 27 nationwide received five stars in every category, with none of the Long Island nursing homes receiving five stars in all four categories

East Meadow, NY.  Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the Nassau Health Care Corporation, proudly announced that the A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Facility in Uniondale, had received five out of five stars in an overall ranking and in quality measures, and four out of five stars in health inspections and staffing, from the federal government Centers for Medicare and Medicaid yardsticks to nursing homes ratings of individual care.

“I am extremely pleased to announce AHP’s inclusion in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid ranking with an overall five stars rating, a significant and truly amazing turn-around for Long Island’s largest nursing home, formerly in distress and  reflecting our commitment to superior quality of care as demonstrated by  excellent surveys, positive financial results in 2008 and 2009,  with 99% occupancy levels, and  evidence that the staff have worked together to ensure that quality of care and safety for this vulnerable population have been and remain our top priorities,” stated Gianelli.

The new rankings are included in the data and ratings founds on Nursing Home Compare, a federal website created by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).  The agency collects and analyzes information on more than 15,500 nursing homes nationwide that accept Medicare or Medicaid residents and rates the facilities on numerous measures from safe food preparation to the amount of nursing care per resident. Out of all the nursing homes surveyed in the United States, only 11 on Long Island received overall five stars rating, and only 27 nationwide received honor roll status with five stars in each of the categories, with none of the Long island nursing homes receiving honor roll with a perfect five stars in each of the four federal yardsticks.

The three yardsticks that CMS uses to rate nursing homes cover these areas:

Health inspections:  Indicates compliance in regular inspections with Medicare and Medicaid standards concerning food safety, hiring practices, and other aspects of healthcare.  Besides looking into such matters as safe food preparation and adequacy of infection control, they evaluate residents’ rights and their quality of life, among other issues.  The rating is based on the number, seriousness, and scope of deficiencies that shoed in the three most recent health inspections and in complaint investigations during the previous three years.

Nurse Staffing:  Indicates of time spent caring for residents by registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, licensed vocational nurses, and certified nursing assistants.

Quality measures:  Indicates adequacy of care, such as percentage of residents with pain, bedsores, or urinary tract infections.

Slatky commended the staff for their exceptional dedication and commitment to quality care for all 589 residents:  “This recognition as one of New York State’s best nursing homes in the US Centers for Medicare and Medicaid website (www.medicare.gov/NHcompare), with an overall five stars rating,  would not have been possible without our staff’s emphasis on quality of care and residents’ safety, with staff’s hard work day to day, leading to the financial and quality of care turnaround for a facility that had previously had numerous challenges and succeeded in accomplishing in astonishing turnaround.”
