Nassau Health Care Corporation was established as a public benefit corporation to serve the people of Nasau County, regardless of their ability to pay – because everyone deserve quality health care. Today, Nassau University Medical Center is the only health care facility in Nassau County that’s prepared to accept ALL PATIENTS, regardless of their insurance, legal status, or ability to pay.
Unfortunately this critical health care resource is under attack from New York State government. Here are the facts:
- Since 2021, New York State has slashed aid to the hospital by hundreds of millions of dollars.
- Through financial audits recently conducted by NUMC’s leadership, New York State deprived the hospital of up to 50 percent of its Federal aid through a long-running Medicaid scam.
- The State-Appointed Nassau Interim Finance Authority (NIFA) has recommended slashing NUMC’s staff by 90 percent and closure of the hospital.
- NIFA has also repeatedly issued reports meant to deliberately mislead the public about the hospital’s financial position and leadership.
- The State Department of Health has refused to meet with NUMC leadership, issue grants to the hospital and is now threatening to take over the hospital, despite not having the legal justification.
NUMC’s new leadership team has systematically identified and addressed the longstanding challenges faced by Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC). Today, despite what you might read in the newspaper, and as a result of reforms implemented by our leadership, NUMC is in the best financial position it has been in years. Our leadership has demonstrated that NUMC can be saved, be profitable and provide top quality care relying on less aid.
To protect Nassau County’s most vulnerable and ensure continued access to our high-quality health care services, NUMC and its parent NHCC have announced their intention to file lawsuits to prevent Albany’s corruption and abuse of power from interfering in the operations of NUMC. These lawsuits are part of NUMC’s efforts to safeguard the services and the jobs that provide care to more than 270,000 patients per year. This page will allow you to follow along with the correspondence and filings developed to help protect NUMC. Please visit often for updates.

LAWSUITS AND LEGAL ACTIONS AGAINST THE NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH
During NUMC’s recent financial, management and operational review, leadership uncovered what may be the largest Medicaid scheme in New York State history that violated Federal law and deprived the hospital of funds to which it was legally entitled. The Department of Health has repeatedly ignored NUMC’s financial progress, refused to meet with leadership and is now threatening a State takeover of the hospital. LAWSUITS AND LEGAL ACTIONS AGAINST NIFA
-
- Following its discovery that New York State engaged in a decades-long Medicaid scam to deprive the largest safety-net hospital on Long Island of as much as $1 billion in aid, NUMC and its parent public benefit corporation, NHCC filed suit against the Nassau County Interim Finance Authority (NIFA), accusing the Authority of gross negligence and abuses of power. In the Article 78 petition filed in State Supreme Court in Nassau County, NUMC details repeated decisions that were arbitrary, capricious, and abuses of the Authority’s discretion. The petition alleges there were significant violations of the public’s trust on the part of the State-appointed fiscal watchdog to advance either its own or the State’s agenda to the reputational and financial detriment of the hospital.
