East Meadow, NY………..Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, NuHealth/NUMC’s President/CEO announces that Rachel Robbins, MD, chair of the department of pathology at the Nassau University Medical Center recently became board certified as a Diplomate in Clinical Informatics by the American Board of Pathology (ABP). The subspecialty board examination and certification are managed through the American Board of Preventive Medicine and the ABP. Dr. Robbins is already board certified in anatomic pathology and clinical pathology and will now, with the addition of clinical informatics, be triple boarded.

This is a relatively new specialty for the ABP as they issue primary certificates in anatomic and clinical pathology, anatomic pathology, clinical pathology and anatomic pathology/neuropathology. As of 2015, only 1105 physicians nationwide were board certified in the specialty of clinical informatics. The granting of a certificate to a physician by the ABP denotes that the pathologist is a physician who has successfully completed a graduate medical education program in pathology or a pathology subspecialty accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education. Clinical informatics is a board specialization approved by the American Board of Medical Specialties sponsored by the American Board of Preventive Medicine and is intended for physicians. Any primarily boarded physician in the U.S. is allowed to complete a sub-specialization in clinical informatics, and the practice pathway is only eligible for practicing physicians until 2018, after which a two year fellowship will be required.

“It is a remarkable achievement and commendable that Dr. Robbins, a certified pathologist and chair of the department at NUMC, has sought greater knowledge and expertise in one or more subspecialty of pathology by achieving the honor of becoming a Diplomate in Clinical Informatics,” stated Dr. Politi.

The mission of the ABP, as a member of the American Board of Medical Specialties, is to promote the field of pathology and the continuing competency of practicing pathologists.

Dr. Robbins added: “I am honored to have received the designation of 2016 Diplomate in Clinical Informatics and look forward to working on improvements in systems and the implementation of health information technology, providing a positive influence on health, quality, efficiency and a reduction in costs.”
