East Meadow, NY…………..Amgad N. Makaryus, MD, FACC, FASE, FSCCT, Chairman of the Department of Cardiology at the Nassau University Medical Center, has a book chapter that he prepared and that will be published in a soon to be released book titled Interesting Cases in Echocardiography.  The book is being released on June 30, 2017.

Dr. Victor F. Politi, NuHealth/NUMC’s President/CEO, congratulated Dr. Makaryus on his accomplishment: “We are proud of your achievement and what it will mean for students and physicians across the world, with your impressive section of the book raising the bar for better patient care, especially for those suffering from cardiac sarcoidosis.”

Sarcoidosis is a disorder causing nonspecific inflammatory changes throughout the body with an overall prevalence of 10–40 cases per 100,000 in the general population. Cardiac sarcoidosis is reported in 25% of autopsy hearts in sarcoid patients with other involvement outside the heart. Cardiac manifestations of this disorder include cor pulmonale caused by pulmonary fibrosis; complete heart block; and arrhythmias such as ventricular tachycardia and supraventricular tachycardia.

Interesting Cases in Echocardiography is a comprehensive text that is a compilation of more than 250 clinical cases and 800 video clips from echocardiographers and cardiologists all over the world. Divided into eleven sections, cases cover all functions of the heart and associated disorders and infections. The majority of cases has an emphasis in echocardiography, with some drawing comparisons with other techniques, predominantly magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomographic (CT) scans. Edited by internationally recognized expert Navin C. Nanda from the University of Alabama, this book features nearly 600 images and a DVD ROM providing echocardiographic video clips. Dr. Makaryus’ chapter (Case 142; page 255) describes a case of cardiac sarcoidosis.

“I have prepared a section in the book titled Interesting Cases in Echocardiography, which is a comprehensive text from cardiologists all over the world. My section highlights the characteristic features of a patient with cardiac sarcoidosis as evaluated by multimodality cardiac imaging utilizing echocardiography and cardiac MRI,” stated Dr. Makaryus.
