NUMC’S BREAST IMAGING CENTER DESIGNATED AN AMERICAN COLLEGE OF RADIOLOGY FACILITY

East Meadow, NY…..Arthur A. Gianelli, President/CEO of the NuHealth System, proudly announces that the Nassau University Medical Center’s breast imaging center has been designated by the American College of Radiology’s Commission on Quality and Safety and the Commission on Breast Imaging (ACR) as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence (BICOE).

“Congratulations to the radiology staff, under the leadership of Victor Scarmato, MD, chair of the department of radiology, for achieving this prestigious designation as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence. It shows the level of commitment that the NuHealth System has to fighting breast disease and demonstrates that we are performing at the highest level, doing everything that we can for the benefit of our patients,” said Gianelli.

By awarding facilities the status of a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence, the ACR recognizes breast imaging centers that have earned accreditation in all of the College’s voluntary, breast-imaging accreditation programs and modules, in addition to the mandatory mammography accreditation program. The breast imaging services at NUMC are fully accredited in mammography, stereotactic breast biopsy, breast ultrasound and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy. Peer-review evaluations, conducted in each breast imaging modality by board-certified physicians and medical physicists who are experts in the field, have determined that NUMC has achieved high practice standards in image quality, personnel qualifications, facility, equipment, quality control procedures and quality assurance programs.

Steven J. Walerstein, MD, FACP, NuHealth’s executive vice president for medical affairs and medical director, complimented the radiology staff for their commitment to excellence in achieving the designation:  “We are pleased to add this recognition to our many awards that attest to our dedication to patient safety and superior care. The ACR BICOE designation signifies that the NUMC Breast Imaging Center provides these essential services to our community at the highest standards of the radiology profession.”

“Dr. Scarmato congratulated his staff as well: “You are to be commended on this well deserved distinction in achieving BICOE status, putting a gold star not just on mammography but also on breast ultrasound, ultrasound guided biopsies and stereotactic breast biopsies. This is a good day for the NUMC radiology department, and most importantly, the patients we serve.”
