East Meadow, NY………Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, NuHealth/NUMC’s President/CEO, proudly announces that the Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC) is a recipient of the New York State Perinatal Quality Collaborative (NYSPQC) Obstetrical Improvement Project’s 2015 Quality Improvement Award. The NYSPQC, an initiative of the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH), aims to provide the best and safest care for women and infants in New York State. Since September 2010, NYSDOH has been collaborating with New York State’s birthing facilities to improve and ensure the quality of obstetrical care, and infant health and safety. Through the NYSPQC Maternal Hemorrhage and Hypertension Initiative, which took place between April 2014 and October 2015, NUMC had the opportunity to learn from faculty and colleagues; receive individual coaching; gather new knowledge on the subject matter and process improvement; share experiences and collaborate on improvement plans and create strategies to overcome improvement barriers.

In a letter dated July 21, 2016, Marilyn A. Kacica, MD, MPH, Medical Director of the Division of Family Health in the New York State Department of Health, stated: “I am pleased to inform you that Nassau University Medical Center is a recipient of the New York State Perinatal Quality Collaborative (NYSPQC) Obstetrical Improvement Project’s 2015 Quality Improvement Award. This award supports the NYSPQC Maternal Hemorrhage and Hypertension Initiative’s mission of advancing improvements in identifying maternal hemorrhage and hypertensive disorders.” Dr. Kacica added: “We congratulate you and recognize the work your facility’s team has done to reach the goal of evaluating women for hemorrhage risk, and providing women with education on the signs and symptoms of postpartum preeclampsia. Your efforts to improve maternal and newborn outcomes are appreciated. Due to the success of participating facilities such as NUMC, the percent of postpartum maternity patients at participating facilities receiving education on the signs and symptoms of postpartum preeclampsia has vastly improved.”

Dr. Politi congratulated the OB/GYN staff under the leadership of Dr. John Riggs, Chairman of OB/GUN, Laura Kyrillidis, RN, Director of Nursing and the entire physician and nursing team upon receiving this prestigious award: “Nassau University Medical Center is the proud recipient of the 2015 New York State Perinatal Quality Collaborative Obstetrical Improvement Project. By receiving this award, NUMC has supported the Initiative’s mission of advancing improvements in identifying maternal hemorrhage and hypertensive disorders. This is a significant achievement that ensures quality obstetrical care for our patients as well as infant health and safety and we proudly accept this recognition,” stated Dr. Politi.

Dr. Riggs added: “This is wonderful news for NUMC’s OB/GYN department, with the award given to facilities whose project teams reported that greater than 80% of women were both evaluated for their risk of hemorrhage at the time of admission to the birth hospitalization, and after delivery, and who received information on the signs and symptoms of postpartum pre-eclampsia prior to discharge. This is the highest level of achievement possible for this project and we commend our entire OB/GYN team for their exemplary work and commitment to this important cause.”
