East Meadow, NY – In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano joined NUMC’s President/CEO Dr. Victor Politi and NUMC clinical staff in promoting New York State’s only state-of-the-art 3D Mammography Mobile Breast Cancer Van which offers the latest technology in breast cancer detection to women throughout Nassau County.

“This Breast Cancer Awareness Month, I urge women over the age of 40, to schedule a routine mammography screening containing the three-dimensional breast tomosynthesis which is the most effective imaging procedure when performing a mammography.  Proven to detect cancers earlier, the 3D mammogram is most efficient at the way its imaging program works,” stated County Executive Mangano.

NUMC receives a Nassau Cancer Screening Grant which covers the costs of mammography and any follow up.  If a woman does have insurance, the insurance company will be billed.  Insurance companies in New York State will cover all costs of screening mammography any additional mammography follow up may require co-pay.  Certified radiologists at the NUMC Breast Imaging Center will interpret mammography images.  All results within normal limits are sent to the participant and their private physician.  If an abnormality exists, both the patient and their designated physician is contacted by a nurse.

Dr. Politi added, “We encourage women to take advantage of NUMC’s breast cancer detection programs. The 3D state-of-the-art technology, both at NUMC’s Breast Imaging Center and in the mobile van, allows the radiologist to look though the tissue to better identify suspicious lesions, as opposed to a 2D composite flat view.  While the 3D breast tomosynthesis screening still compresses the breast like a traditional mammogram, it takes multiple images at different angles to create a view through slices in a 3D image, with results in less than 24 hours, by board certified radiologists.”
