NASSAU UNIVERSITY MEDICAL CENTER ACHIEVES RECOGNITION IN THE TOP 10% AS ONE OF HEALTHGRADES “2015 GYNECOLOGIC SURGERY EXCELLENCE AWARD” RECIPIENTS

East Meadow, NY, June 22, 2015 – Nassau University Medical Center today announced that it has been named one of a select group of national hospitals—the top 10% of hospitals evaluated — identified as providing outstanding performance in gynecologic surgery, as measured by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals.

Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, NuHealth/NUMC’s President/CEO congratulated the staff on this prestigious recognition: “I am delighted to recognize NUMC’s OB/GYN department for its Healthgrades “Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award”, a testament to the expertise of the clinical staff for attaining levels of optimal performance required to ensure best outcomes for patients undergoing gynecologic procedures. The distinction made by Healthgrades confirms that our OB/GYN department, led by Chaur-Dong Hsu, MD, MPH, FACOG, is among a select group of hospitals nationwide with five stars for gynecologic procedures, five stars for hysterectomies and five stars for vaginal deliveries.”

“Healthgrades 2015 Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award is designed to provide consumers with access to the information needed to make an informed decision about where to seek treatment for the best possible outcomes in gynecologic surgery,” said Evan Marks, Chief Strategy Officer, Healthgrades.  “The hospitals that achieved this distinction have demonstrated exceptional performance and a dedicated approach when it comes to gynecological care.”

Dr. Hsu praised his departmental staff: “I would like to thank our entire staff on achieving this success. We are honored to receive this award and are proud of our staff’s expertise, professionalism and dedication to our patients.”

Healthgrades Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award includes hysterectomy and surgery related to female reproductive organs.  To help consumers evaluate and compare hospital performance in gynecologic surgery, Healthgrades analyzed patient outcome data for all patients (all-payer data) made available by 13 individual states for years 2011 through 2013. Healthgrades found that there is a significant variation in quality for gynecologic surgery.

• From 2011-2013, patients treated in hospitals receiving the Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award, have, on average, a 46.1% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award.*
• From 2011-2013, if all hospitals in the 13 states included in this analysis, as a group, performed similarly to hospitals receiving the Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award, on average, 17,592patients experiencing one or more in-hospital complications could potentially have been avoided. *

Victor Scarmato, MD, acting chief medical officer joined Dr. Politi in congratulating staff on receiving the 2015 Healthgrades Gynecologic Surgery Excellence Award as well as being in the top 10% of the country for this prestigious achievement.  NUMC did receive other 5 stars in the following: 5-star rated for gynecologic procedures, 5-star rated for hysterectomies and 5-star rated for vaginal deliveries and staff deserves praise for this prestigious national distinction bestowed upon them.”
