East Meadow, NY…….Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, NuHealth/NUMC’s President/CEO announces that Matthew J. Sullivan, RN was recently honored as NUMC’s nominee to the Nassau Suffolk Hospital Council’s Nurse of Excellence Award.

“Congratulations to Mr. Sullivan who was named as Nassau University Medical Center’s Nassau Suffolk Hospital Council’s Nurse of Excellence for his volunteerism and his dedication to those less fortunate. He has made it his life’s goal to serve his community as a registered professional nurse and as a community activist. His commitment and compassion to our patients are exemplary and we are very proud of him and his accomplishments,” said Dr. Politi.

The Nassau Hospital Council maintains this recognition program because the registered nurse is truly the core of any hospital.

Kathy Skarka, MSN, RN, NUMC’s Executive Vice President for Patient Care Services, congratulated Mr. Sullivan: “I am honored to have the privilege to work with Mr. Sullivan, a compassionate nursing professional and role model, and I am proud to have him represent our nursing department as this year’s nominee.

Mr. Sullivan has worked at NUMC for seven years as an operating room nurse. He is a highly professional service line coordinator for specialty services in oral and maxillofacial surgery, neurosurgery and podiatry.  Dedicated to the OR nursing profession, he has been an important leader of NUMC’s fellowship programs.  He is also a preceptor to new nurses working in the operating room. Since he is responsible for hundreds of different types of equipment and instrumentation, he created a new tray to help the surgeon and nurses provide safe care in the OR.  In this way, he minimized the number of instruments needed, thereby decreasing the chance for human error. Because of his deep dedication to the nursing profession, he is involved in many fundraising efforts to benefit such causes as cancer research and wounded veterans.  Matthew also honors his brother, a New York firefighter who lost his lie on 9/11, by participating in the Tunnel to Towers run. Michael’s co-workers have been inspired to join him in his fundraising efforts and do several runs a year.
