East Meadow, NY………..Victor F. Politi, MD, FACP, FACEP, NuHealth/NUMC’s President/CEO announces that the NUMC department of cardiology performed its first catheter-directed thrombolysis of a pulmonary embolism,  at the Nassau University Medical Center. Recently, physicians in the NUMC department of cardiology cared for a patient who presented to the emergency department and was diagnosed with a bilateral pulmonary embolism, a potentially lethal syndrome.

“Pulmonary emboli are blood clots that obstruct blood flow in the pulmonary arteries, resulting in a very dangerous condition causing poor oxygenation and heart damage. This condition has a high mortality if not treated, and the treatment for certain patients consists of administering thrombolytics which are potent drugs to dissolve the clot,” stated Dr. Politi. “Thrombolytics are usually administered through a peripheral intravenous line and circulate all over the body until they reach the lung. This leads to a high risk of bleeding, which is a common and dangerous side effect. In order to limit the amount of drug administered and therefore limit the bleeding risk, while maintaining the effect on the blood clot, Drs. Andrea Mignatti and Samy Selim were able to place a special catheter to deliver the drug directly into the pulmonary arteries, at the site of the clot, resolving the condition.”

Dr. Amgad Makaryus, chairman of the cardiology department at NUMC added: “This cutting edge procedure is called “catheter-directed thrombolysis” and was performed on this patient. After the procedure, the patient’s symptoms improved, he did well and was discharged home. Our trained on-staff interventional cardiologists, Drs. Mignatti and Selim are able to perform this potentially life-saving and cutting edge technique at NUMC for patients who need the procedure.” For information on the cardiology department, please call 516-296-4949.
