Pathology & Labs Home

The function of pathology is to provide diagnostic information on the identity and causative factors of human disease. Virtually every clinical department in a hospital interacts with and utilizes the pathology service, making it among the most fundamental of medical disciplines. The quality of patient care is thus a reflection of the quality of services offered in pathology.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratories at NUMC is dedicated to promoting excellence in diagnostic care, provided in a timely and compassionate manner. Our comprehensive clinical pathology services include “gold standard” infectious disease testing in our virology and microbiology laboratories, blood banking and transfusion services, as well as molecular diagnostics and cytopathology. Anatomic pathology services include autopsy, surgical pathology, and fine needle aspiration.

Our department is home to one of the most established and widely respected pathology residency training programs in the region. Our board-certified staff provides training and research opportunities in a structured, four-year program for NUMC pathology residents, as well as supplemental training for NUMC residents from other clinical disciplines, such as ophthalmology, pediatrics, oncology, and gynecology. Our programs are also used to educate pathology residents from other hospitals on Long Island.

We continually strive to provide excellent, state-of-the-art diagnostic care and are dedicated to fostering the next generation of talented, well-trained pathologists toward meeting the needs of our community.
