Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program

The residency program is fully accredited, independent, four-year program. It has 16 categorical residents and one preliminary resident. The program has affiliation with South Nassau Communities Hospital and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Our residents rotate to South Nassau Communities Hospital to obtain additional experience in operative gynecology. They also rotate to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center to enhance their knowledge in the management of gynecological oncology patients.

PGY1 residents spend the entire year at Nassau University Medical Center. They have 3 months of Obstetrics on the day tour and 3 months of Obstetrics on the night tour. They rotate on the Gynecology Service for three months and on Medicine service for 3 months.

PGY2 residents rotate on the Gynecology service for 3 months, Family Planning for 3 months and Gynecology ER for 3 months. They also rotate at South Nassau Communities Hospital for 3 months. They cover the Obstetric Service.

PGY3 residents rotate on Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Service for 3 months and The Antepartum Service for 3 months. They rotate at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center for 4 weeks and Medicine Service for 6 weeks. These residents also rotate at South Nassau Communities Hospital for 3 months on the Gynecology Service.

PGY4 residents spend three months on Obstetrical service day tour and 3 months on Obstetrical service night tour. They spend 3 months on Gynecology rotation and 3 months on Gynecology Oncology rotation.

Physical Facilities

The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology is located on the 3rd floor of the Dynamic Care Building. This floor has Labor & Delivery, The Perinatal Center for Fetal Assessment, Level 3 NICU, Antepartum and Postpartum Unit. Labor & Delivery has 7 labor rooms and a Water Birthing Room. It has the Recovery Room and 2 Operating Rooms and 2 Delivery Rooms that can be readily used as Operating Rooms. The Gynecology Service admits patients to the 3rd floor as well as on the 8th floor.

Structure

The Division of Obstetrics provides a broad scope of clinical care in Perinatal Medicine. This includes but not limited to prenatal genetic counseling and testing. We perform ultrasound, Biophysical profile and NST. The Division of Gynecology provides services in Gynecology Oncology, Urogynecology and Pelvic Floor Surgeries, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. We also provide Colposcopy evaluation and treatment.

Education

The residency program main focus is to train residents to become competent physicians. The residents’ education consists of didactic sessions on a daily basis. The attending physicians provide constant supervision for the residents on all services. Clinical case discussion between the attending physicians and the residents is an integral component of the residents’ education. The residents have ˝ day every Tuesday for lecture series. This includes ACGME requirement for lectures in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Medical Jurisprudence, and topics in Primary Care Medicine. The program has medical students who rotate from Stony Brook Medical School and New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. The faculty holds academic appointment from both institutions.

Research

All resident are required to perform research and to present one research project at the end of his or her third year. This is a mandatory requirement for graduation.

After Residency

The majority of our residents go back to their communities to provide Obstetrics/Gynecological services either in the format of private practice or hospital-based practice. Some of our residents continue their education by doing fellowship in the various subspecialties of Obstetrics & Gynecology.
