Dental Medicine -- General Practice Residency
The Department of Dental Medicine and Oral Surgery
sponsors an ADA accredited General Practice Residency
training program; a one-year curriculum of advanced
training. This comprehensive training conforms
to the standards set forth by the Council on Dental
Education. Experiences include extensive didactic
and clinical training in dentistry and rotations
to oral surgery, anesthesia and emergency medicine.
The Resident participates in the care of inpatients
and outpatients and receives supervised instruction
and practice on a post-graduate scale in Restorative
Dentistry, Prosthodontics (including Implantology),
Oral Surgery, Endodontics, Periodontics, Oral
Pathology, Oral Medicine, Treatment Planning,
Emergency Medicine, IV Sedation and Physical Evaluation.
The program is student oriented. The principal
objective is to broaden the perspective of the
recent graduate by affording the opportunity to
treat and observe those conditions not common
in undergraduate clinics, to render emergency
and comprehensive care, to enhance the knowledge
of the oral tissues and the various physiological
systems in relation to disease and traumatic conditions
and to familiarize the resident with the various
allied medical sections in the hospital. As a
result of these training procedures, we believe
that his/her total clinical judgment and technical
ability will be enhanced to such a degree that,
upon completion of training, the resident will
become a more proficient dentist, able to render
excellent service to his/her patients.
The resident will be required to carry out a clinical
study or review of the literature. A scientific
paper will be prepared in a literary style acceptable
for publication in a professional journal.
The Attending staff has been carefully selected
in order that the highest quality of training
can be delivered to the resident. Directors of
the various divisions have completed post-graduate
training in their respective specialties, and
several are Diplomates of the American Boards.
Attendance and participation is required for all
staff meetings including seminars, symposiums,
guest lectures and continuing education conferences.
Regional dental meetings will be attended at the
discretion of the Program Director.
The estimated annual stipend will be $44,395.
A certificate of training will be awarded upon
successful completion of the program.
Applications to the program must be completed
through the Postdoctoral Application Support Service.
