Department of Anesthesiology
The Nassau University Medical Center's Department
of Anesthesiology sponsors a Residency Training
Program which is affiliated with Winthrop University
Hospital, Saint Francis Hospital and South Nassau
Communities Hospital. The Medical Center is a
major teaching affiliate of the School of Medicine
of the State University of New York at Stony Brook
and the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine
and is an affiliate of the North Shore - Long
Island Jewish Health System. The institutions
provide an ideal setting for anesthesia training
administering in combination over 30,000 anesthetics
per year. The training is enhanced by the presence
of Trauma, Perinatal and Burn Centers.
The Department currently consists of over 30 attending
anesthesiologists including specialists in Obstetrical
Anesthesia, Cardiac Anesthesia, Critical Care
Medicine, Pain Management and Pediatric Anesthesia.
The Program trains 15 Clinical Anesthesia Residents
and both allopathic and osteopathic Clinical Base
positions can be provided.. Medical students wishing
to apply for CA-1 (PGY-2) positions will do so
through the NRMP 'Advanced Program for Students.'
Positions are also available for physicians currently
in training or practice.
The 36 month clinical training consists of extensive
experience in general and subspecialty anethesia.
In depth training is given in Obstetrical, Neurosurgical,
Pediatric, Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular Anesthesia
together with rotations in Critical Care Medicine
and Pain Management. Experience is provided in
Perioperative Medicine with rotations in the Preadmission
Evaluation Unit and the Postanesthesia Care Unit.
Our intensive didactic program consists of five
teaching sessions per week which include formal
lectures, journal clubs and case conferences.
The Department maintains its own library and has
considerable audiovisual and computer equipment
to support the educational effort.
