Wound Care & Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment Center

Nassau Health Care Corporation offers the tri-state
area's first Level I Trauma Center with a multi-disciplinary
Wound Care Team and a large, multiplace hyperbaric
oxygen chamber. The Wound Care Team can evaluate
and treat the entire spectrum of problem wounds.
Once in the Center, diagnostic tests can be performed
to determine if hyperbaric oxygen treatments are
necessary. Complete wound care treatment, including
cleansing, debridement, and dressings can be done
in the Center on a daily basis if needed.
Board-certified physicians staff the Center, and
the patients are under continuous physician supervision
while in the Center. Our nursing and technical staff
are fully trained and nationally certified with
many years of patient care experience. Even critically
ill patients may be treated, since necessary technical
and nursing staff can accompany them in the chamber.
As we are in a tertiary referral hospital, patients
have access to any specialty physician care needed
during their hyperbaric treatment.
The Hyperbaric Chamber has been operational since
1996. During treatments, patients, along with a
medical attendant, are pressurized and allowed to
breathe pure, 100% oxygen. Patients can read or
nap in chairs or recliners during the painless 90-minute
treatments. The vast majority of treatments are
done on an outpatient basis with no restrictions
on their normal daily activities.

Our Multi-Place Hyperbaric Chamber
The chamber is located within the Wound Care Center.

What is Hyperbaric Oxygen (HB0) Used For?
In addition to problem wounds, the hyperbaric chamber
can be used to treat, or assist in treatment, of
a wide range of serious medical conditions. These
include commonly known diagnoses such as carbon
monoxide poisoning and diving accidents to unusual
problems like gas gangrene, bone infections, and
complications following radiation therapy.
Which Patients are Candidates for HBO Therapy?
If a patient has a condition, like gas gangrene,
which can only effectively be treated with hyperbaric
oxygen, they will start immediately in the chamber.
If the patient has a long-term, or chronic, problem
wound, like a diabetic ulcer, they will be evaluated
by members of our team from plastic surgery, vascular
surgery, general surgery, and podiatry to determine
if surgery is a necessary component of their care.
We will then measure the oxygen levels in their
wound to see if HBO is needed. After these decisions
are made, aggressive wound care will be started.
How Can I Be Seen at the WOUND CARE & HYPERBARIC
OXYGEN TREATMENT CENTER?
Call 1-888-HBO-HEAL (1-888-426-4325) A hyperbaric
physician is available at anytime for routine or
emergency consultations with any referring physician.
Our staff is also available at this number to co-ordinate
patient visits, schedule physician appointments,
or to answer your questions.
What Does The Future Hold?
Despite more than half a century of experience treating
a wide variety of medical conditions with HBO, the
field is rapidly growing. New conditions are added
to the list of acceptable diagnoses once the benefit
has been proven. For example, studies are now being
conducted to evaluate hyperbaric oxygen in the treatment
of heart attacks and strokes. Our Center has been,
and continues to be, involved in these research
projects and so will always be at the forefront
of emerging therapies.
