Medicine — Our Medical Emergency
Department is staffed by fully trained, Board Certified/Eligible
internists 24-hours a day. We treat all medical
emergencies, as well as coordinate all ambulance
care throughout Nassau County with our Medical Control
Unit. Every bed in the department has cardiac monitoring
capability. Quick access to subspecialties is always
available.
Surgery — Our Surgical Emergency
Department, with a modern and fully equipped Trauma
Room, is staffed 24 hours a day by surgeons. NUMC
is a Level I Trauma Center for Nassau County, receiving
critically ill patients from all areas of the County
via ambulance and helicopter. Our X-ray department,
adjacent to the emergency room, has radiologists
in-house to review all films -- day or night.
Pediatrics — Our Pediatric Emergency
Department is the only one on Long Island staffed
all day, every day by fully trained Pediatricians.
You can feel secure that no matter when it might
happen, your child's emergency can be handled without
delay.
Gynecology — Patients requiring
gynecological care are treated by our staff gynecologists
in a separate and private Gynecology Suite.
Emergency Ambulatory Unit — For
your convenience, we offer a fast-track Emergency
Ambulatory Unit to treat patients with less critical
illness.
Psychiatry — A separately located
Psychiatric Emergency Department is available, staffed
around the clock by psychiatrists and specially
trained social workers.
Geriatrics — NUMC is proud to announce
the opening of the first emergency room exclusively
devoted to taking care of the people who took care
of us. People in their 60s, 70s and 80s have more
complex medical needs than younger people. At NUMC's
new Geriatric Emergency Room - the first of its
kind on Long Island - we have board-certified doctors
who are specially trained in geriatric medicine.
Not only do they treat emergency illness, they also
carefully assess each patient for symptoms of illnesses
that are common among the elderly.
Also on hand are psychiatrists, nurses and social
workers, who make sure patients can manage the activities
of daily living. If you or an elderly loved one
or friend need emergency care, come to the Emergency
Department and you will be directed to the Geriatric
Emergency Room. We're happy to be there for the
people who were there for us.

Ambulance Division
"The N.U.M.C. Ambulance Division provides Advanced
Life Support transportation services to patients
requiring transfer to and from the N.U.M.C Campus
and outlying facilities. The Division is comprised
of thirty-seven field, and eleven supervisory healthcare
professionals with certifications ranging from EMT-Basic
through EMT-Paramedic. In addition to the required
New York State curriculum for the individual certifications,
all members are trained to utilize advanced medical
equipment not routinely found on all ambulances.
Medication infusion pumps, artificial ventilators,
and pulse oximitry are just a few examples.
All members are mandated to maintain the highest
standard of proficiency and professionalism. Continuing
education and aggressive quality assurance programs
help to maintain that standard. Many of our field
and supervisory staff have received training in
hazardous material decontamination. They can be
called upon at anytime to respond to a hazardous
material incident.
The Ambulance Division operates five N.Y.S. Certified
Advanced Life Support ambulances. Our ambulances
are fully equipped and professionally maintained
for readiness. Although the majority of transportation
needs are in the Long Island and 5 boroughs area,
we do have the ability to accommodate long distance
transportations. Our crews have provided Advanced
Life Support transportation from Vermont to Virginia.
In addition to routine patient transfers and discharges,
the Ambulance Division occasionally provides emergency
medical support at large functions such as, the
Long Island Marathon and the PGA U.S. Open."
