Kenneth J. Steier, DO, MPH, MHA is the Associate Medical Director and Director
of Osteopathic Medical Education at the Nassau
University Medical Center. In his role as DME,
Dr. Steier oversees the medical education of 30
residents along with dozens of third and fourth
year medical students from the New York College
of Osteopathic Medicine and the Stony Brook School
of Medicine. As Associate Medical Director, Dr.
Steier assists the Medical Director in leading
the medical staff of the hospital, monitoring
quality improvement initiatives, and interacting
with the medical community. When the Medical Director
is unavailable, the Associate Medical Director
serves in his capacity.
Dr. Steier graduated from NYCOM in 1983 and completed
a rotating internship as well as an Internal Medicine
Residency and a Pulmonary/Critical Care Fellowship.
He is triple-board certified in Internal Medicine,
Pulmonary Medicine, and Critical Care Medicine.
Dr. Steier also has Master's degrees in both Public
Health and Health Administration, and is currently
enrolled in a Master's of Business Administration
("MBA") program.
As Patient Safety Officer, Dr. Steier oversees
patient safety throughout NUMC and serves on the
Joint Commission Leadership Team. He is chair
of the important Medication Safety Committee and
Vice-chair of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee.
He is also Medical Director of the Pulmonary Care
Unit.
In addition to his responsibilities at NUMC, Dr.
Steier has several Federal Appointments and has
achieved national recognition. He is a member
of the Food and Drug Administration's Panel on
Respiratory Drugs and Devices, which reviews new
drugs and medical equipment submitted to the FDA
for regulatory approval. In addition, Dr. Steier
is a consultant to the Health Resources Services
Administration, which evaluates grant applications
for residency support from hospitals across the
United States. Recently, Dr. Steier was appointed
by the President of the American Osteopathic Association
to the Council on Osteopathic Postdoctoral Training
Institutions, which oversees residency training
nationally.
Dr. Steier was chosen by the NYCOM graduating
class of 2005 as the "Preceptor of Year" and has
previously been chosen by interns and residents
as "Teacher of the Year." He also serves as a
Clinical Assistant Dean for NYCOM.
Dr. Steier also makes frequent appearances, as
a medical expert, on News 12, Channel 29 and Channel
55.
Dr. Steier is an avid sports fan, closely following
the New York Yankees, Rangers, Jets and Knicks,
and plays competitive league basketball twice
per week.
