Welcome
As a major ophthalmic teaching center for Long
Island, Nassau University Medical Center's Ophthalmology
Department is the choice of patients and health
care providers alike.
The spectrum of ophthalmic subspecialties is well
represented by our attending faculty. Although
highly regarded for being knowledgeable and skilled
clinicians, our growing team of attendings is
best known for their approachability and commitment
to teaching. Their areas of expertise include
cataract and anterior segment surgery, glaucoma
surgery, vitreo-retinal surgery, oculoplastic
surgery, pediatric ophthalmic surgery, and refractive
surgery.
The majority of the physician-surgeon graduates
from our three-year ophthalmology residency program
go on to complete fellowships in a wide range
of subspecialties. Having completed our program,
they command the necessary skills and knowledge
to be distinguished clinical ophthalmologists
in their specialty fields. Self-directed opportunity
for academic pursuits such as research is also
encouraged in our program. The ophthalmology residency
program is fully accredited by the Accreditation
Council for Graduate Medical Education. The sheer
number of the diagnostic workups and treatment
plans employed by our residents easily surpasses
the requirements for certification by the American
Board of Ophthalmology, yet residents find they
have ample study and personal time.
Medical students, too, find our department conducive
to learning through their rotations in the Eye
Clinic, during which time they have a preceptorship
with an ophthalmology resident. As potential future
general Internal Medicine doctors, they gain appropriate
knowledge and skills to recognize significant
ophthalmologic disorders, perform basic eye exams,
and refer patients appropriately to ophthalmologists.
Finally, our Grand Rounds in Ophthalmology and
occasional subspecialty conferences allow even
community doctors and, particularly, ophthalmologists
to be informed about new discoveries and developments
in ophthalmology and the relevance of the new
information to their clinical practices.
Our department is approachable yet academic, patient-centered
yet teaching-oriented. On behalf of the faculty
of the Department of Ophthalmology at Nassau University
Medical Center, I welcome you into our warm community
of learning and healing.
