Family Medicine

Welcome

The Department of Family Medicine at Nassau University Medical Center offers a fully accredited AOA Family Medicine Residency Training Program. We welcome your interest in joining our seasoned faculty in the journey that prepares a new graduate for the successful practice of Family Medicine. The department ensures the availability of an educational environment that fosters academic prosperity in a culturally diverse setting. Our 36-month curriculum is designed to prepare the trainee for a successful career in the practice of family medicine in today’’s challenging primary care environment. Our program is designed to fully equip our residents for the many options open to family medicine physicians. While the program follows the curricular standards set forth by the American College of Osteopathic Family Medicine and the AOA, it allows the flexibility necessary for the development of individual interests in the wide spectrum of the scope of practice that is family medicine.

Our program’’s ““center of gravity”” is in the NuHealth/Long Island Federally Qualified Health Centers, Inc. (LIFQHC) facilities. The Teaching Family Health Centers, located in Elmont and Westbury, NY are the home of the continuity of care educational experience for our program. Both of these facilities are Level III Patient Centered Medical Homes. It is here that residents manage their individual panel of patients under the close supervision of a seasoned faculty. The diverse patient population provides extraordinary exposure to a variety of pathologic and physiologic disease states. Our multidisciplinary medical education framework includes in-patient teaching services, specialty rotations, daily lectures and community outreach. Throughout the training experience, residents are exposed to the latest technology and patient-centered models for care to best prepare them for the challenges of practicing primary care in the years to come.

Housed in the Long Island Federally Qualified Health Centers, Inc. (LIFQHC), we are one of the few Family Medicine training programs in New York State sponsored by recently awarded HRSA grants. Our unique model allows the continuity-of-care ambulatory component of the training program to be its centerpiece. The emphasis, both physically and conceptually, is on the underserved community and its needs. By bringing the training program out to the community, we attempt to reduce or eliminate the barriers to health care access encountered by the growing number of patients who do not have a primary physician. In providing an alternative for those who may currently use the ER for their primary health care needs, or those whose care is otherwise fragmented, we are committed to improving the health of the community. We educate our trainees in the preventive medicine techniques and the modern methods of improved patient access that are now required to maintain a healthy patient population and avoid unnecessary patient hospitalization. Throughout the training program, osteopathic principles are incorporated into all phases of ongoing patient care. Our weekly osteopathic clinic allows for more concentrated study and intensive therapy utilizing manipulation techniques. Upon program completion, the trainee will be prepared to take care of medical issues affecting patients from infancy through old age.
