Message From The Chairperson


Exciting changes are on the way at Nassau University Medical Center (NUMC). The Department of Emergency Medicine is already one of the regions leading Emergency Medicine facilities. Moving forward, the hospital is building a 55 million dollar brand new state-of-the-art facility which will be the pride of emergency medicine in the entire region. Moreover, NUMC has recruited a new and energetic leadership and faculty that bring their renowned clinical and academic expertise to patients, students, and residents alike. We have the full support and help of the institutional administration in realizing our vision of state of the art medical care for all of Nassau County.

NUMC is a Level I Trauma Center for Nassau County, receiving critically ill patients from all areas of the County via ambulance and helicopter. In addition to these acute medical services, we also offer pediatric and Family Support Services, the Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and a Rape Advocate Program. We are an Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (Safe) center of Excellence, and offer a Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect Unit (SCAN) unit.

Goals for 2008

  • Approval of 55 million dollar plan to expand the Emergency      Department to better serve our patient's needs in the years to      come
  • Continued recruitment of top notched board certified      Emergency Medicine Physicians and Nurses
  • Continued analysis of ED systems to identify barriers to patient      throughput and to make visits to our Emergency Department      more pleasant.
  • Development and maintainance of our designation as a Sexual      Assault and Forensic Examiner (SAFE) Center of Excellence
  • Continued development of affiliations with the NSLIJ residency      program and the soon to be opened Hofstra University Medical      School, while continuing to foster our current relationships with      other institutions
  • Implementation of a totally electronic medical record to improve patient throughput, improve documentation      and compliance and facilitate our Emergency Departments ability to communicate with outside/private      physicians

  • Development of our faculty and staff in interests that serve the community such as emergency medical      services, Emergency preparedness, stroke awareness and treatment
  • Outreach to the community about the awareness of the new services available at our Emergency Department
